Dark Eyes at Sunrise

I see purple hues in sunsets

in California skies,

they are swirls in berry ice cream.

Seems my mind is playing tricks again.

I’m lost in fancies,

truth mixed in with hope that

the clouds will win

and blend in

and I’ll see your dark eyes appear

at sundown.

When the sun falls past the far horizon

and the gold turns dark blue,

stars slowly creep in.

My heart rests in a world of wonder.

I close my eyes and sleep under a night blanket.

In my drowsy state, I hear you singing:

“Go to sleep.”

Softly. “Go to sleep”

and you lay down beside me.

At daybreak, those purple ribbons

turn back to gold,

streaking sunlight wakes me, gently,

and I hold on to the lullaby you sang me

and to those dark eyes

at sunrise.
